Wedding Planning Checklist for Couples Engaged in January

The Barn at Belle Hills • February 2, 2026

Getting engaged any time of the year is exciting. Of course, there’s something magical about getting engaged in January. There is excitement from the proposal mixed with that fresh-start energy that makes you want to celebrate ASAP. Of course, once the initial celebrations end, couples often ask the same question: Where do we begin? Here is a wedding planning timeline we’d recommend to recently engaged couples:

Step 1: Celebrate

With a few Type A team members, we know that plenty of couples want to dive into planning. However, we highly recommend you celebrate this next step in your relationship first. There will be plenty of hours creating lists, making spreadsheets, and interviewing potential wedding venues. Take a moment to enjoy your time as a newly engaged couple and create memories that will remind you that, even in the midst of crazy wedding planning, you have a wonderful marriage to look forward to.

Step 2: Talk About Budget

Budgets may not be the most romantic topic, but they are extremely important when creating your wedding planning timeline and checklist. Sitting down and setting a realistic budget helps decision-making down the line and prevents the risk of overspending. Our wedding planning team is passionate about price transparency, providing newly engaged couples with a clear idea of their budget.

Step 3: Create Your Guest List

Speaking of budgets, your guest list affects everything, including the budget, your venue layout, and catering choices. Starting early with a rough list helps you determine what type of venue you need and if you need to adjust your budget. It’s totally okay if this list changes over time, but having a working version now will give you a solid running start.

Step 4: Choose Your Venue

Wedding venues are typically booked 12 to 18 months in advance. That’s why January is prime time for touring spaces, especially if you are considering a popular wedding barn venue or a scenic Kentucky wedding venue in the summer or fall months. From rustic barn weddings to modern barn weddings, our beautiful venue nestled in Crittenden, Kentucky, is a lovely place for couples to celebrate their love. It also tends to book quickly, so we recommend scheduling your tour ASAP.

Step 5: Select Key Vendors

After selecting the venue, we recommend selecting photographers, coordinators, caterers, and entertainment. Similar to venues, these professionals book up quickly. Some venues do provide an internal team of vendors, so be sure to discuss whether or not this is available when contacting your potential wedding space. Securing your core team early allows you to relax and enjoy the rest of the planning process.

Step 6: Choose a Style

This is where the fun starts to pick up speed! Selecting the style of your wedding will influence the layout of your venue, the color palettes, attire for your wedding party, and more. Whether you want something elegant and high-brow or relaxed and rustic, The Barn at Belle Hills is capable of transforming into your dream wedding venue with ease.
