How to Make Your Wedding Accessible for Guests
Your wedding day is a momentous occasion, and all your loved ones should be there to celebrate with you. Our team understands that accessibility may affect which wedding venue you choose. We are proud to be an accessible wedding venue, and
The Barn at Belle Hills’ team is here with a few ideas for making your wedding ceremony and reception more accessible.

Accessible wedding venues
When we hear accessibility, we often think of wheelchair accessibility, though it can be more than that. Creating easily accessible spaces benefits people who use mobility aids, like a wheelchair or cane, have hearing or vision loss, are sensitive to certain lights and sounds, or have a different stature. With so many forms of accessibility to consider, how do you ensure you’re creating a space that welcomes everyone?
finding accessible wedding venues
Selecting a wedding venue is one of the first major decisions you and your partner will make in the wedding planning process. While you explore potential locations, keep your guest list in mind. Are you inviting anyone with mobility concerns? Even if no one on your guest is currently facing these concerns, keep in mind that this can change at any time. Here are a few things to consider:
- Flat Terrain: Guests who use mobility aids, like walkers, canes, and wheelchairs, will appreciate a venue with flat, smooth terrain. Steer clear of steep hills and unpaved surfaces, such as dirt and gravel. These kinds of walkways can be hazardous for differently abled guests, especially if there is inclement weather on your day.
- Bathrooms: Every venue should have at least one accessible bathroom, but is that enough? And is that bathroom truly accessible? Consider the pathway to the restroom, the height of the sink, and if there are grab bars near the toilet.
- Stairs, Ramps, and Elevators: If your venue has stairs, is there an easily accessible alternative for those unable to use them? Ask about ramps and elevators. If you can, try to test out any elevators or chair lifts to confirm they are practical for your loved ones.
- Quiet Spaces: For some, weddings can be overstimulating and stressful. Emotions are high, there are many people, and loud music and bright lights may be overwhelming. See if your venue has a space for guests to step out and enjoy some calm energy before returning to the reception.
It’s a good idea to share any accessibility concerns with the wedding venue staff when you tour the space. Ask how the team handles specific concerns and how they respond to potential emergencies. Check in with the venue staff shortly before your wedding day to ensure they can still accommodate everyone on your list.
